​Hello! I'm Monica, the founder, designer and maker behind Alter. I started the brand out of a passion for creating stylish, easy-to-wear accessories that are kind to animals and the planet.

 

Since 2020, I've been using renewable and innovative sustainable plant-based textiles throughout my collections. These textiles lead to far less waste than animal leather or plastic based leather alternatives (ie. PU, PVC), resulting in lower energy use, reduced landfill, and a smaller environmental footprint.

 

Each piece is made to order or produced in small batches to avoid over production, ensuring a more thoughtful and intentional approach to how fashion is made.

 

The name Alter represents change and transformation. an idea that sits at the heart of the brand. It reflects a commitment to challenging conventional materials and rethinking waste, showing how discarded plant-based resources can be transformed into something functional, beautiful, and exciting.​​

Every item is handcrafted with care, using either a sewing machine or traditional hand stitching techniques. Each piece is lightweight, water-resistant, and thoughtfully made with sustainability in mind. My designs are modern and easy to wear - effortless styles for everyday life.

Alter began in London, where the brand was originally based. I am now based in Madeira, Portugal, where I continue to design and make each piece in a slower, more considered way, and occasionally travel back to the UK for pop-up events.
